Self Awareness

Being self-aware of ones values, beliefs and competence is essential to being a successful therapist. As a therapist, I take various actions to ensure that I remain neutral with my clients and not transfer any of my own experiences, beliefs or values.

1) I reflect on my experiences and identify
similarities to ensure that I'm using therapeutic
modalities and evidenced based treatment plans.
This helps me separate my own experiences,
beliefs and values from those of the clients.

2) I seek consultation with other therapists in the
office to discuss any challenges and get their
    professional advice.

3) I communicate with supervisors areas of practice
that would be challenging to me due to current
    or past experiences.

4) I seek therapy. I have my own personal
therapist that I see on a routine basis to work
    through my own presenting issues.

5) I follow the ACA Code of Ethics. I always refer to the code of ethics and question if my treatment plan is
focused on the welfare of the client.
