Flexibility
Flexibility is an important disposition in counseling because not every intervention for presenting problems works for everyone. Counseling is most successful when the goals and treatment plans are created unique to the client's experiences and needs. The ability to explore, learn and collaborate together allows for flexibility to find the interventions that work best for the client. As a counselor in training, I have found that an integrative therapeutic approach allows for exploring and customizing so clients can fit them to their needs.
In addition to an integrative approach, flexibility can also derive from collaboration within the therapeutic relationship as well as staffing with counseling supervisors and peers. Finally, continuous education and research is extremely beneficial for therapists to learn new modalities and interventions and grow their competence and skills.
